  • The Better Business Bureau warned Grand Island residents and business owners that scammers may try to take advantage of flood damage repairs and advised checking insurance coverage, taking photos of damage, and getting at least three estimates. The agency stressed that all contracts should be in writing to help prevent fraud.  KSNB
  • The Better Business Bureau warned local residents of contractor scams during storm damage recovery and advised them to verify contractor credentials—reports indicate that scammers have increased their efforts after recent storms. The agency is urging homeowners to check contractor licenses and reviews before hiring.  KSNB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oscar Garcia became Grand Island Public Schools' new Director of Nutrition Services in March after longtime director Kris Spellman retired following 27 years of service. Garcia, who worked with Spellman since May 2024 and previously held management roles at Hy-Vee, will lead the department to serve more than 8,000 students daily — ensuring a smooth transition in the school meals program.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government approved state Sen. Mike Jacobson’s Medicaid plan that boosts extra dollars for Nebraska hospitals, with funds coming from a 6% tax on net patient revenue—recycled each year to raise future payments. Gov. Pillen said the new law will help rural health care, and work on other parts of the plan is still underway.  The Grand Island Independent
