- ➤ The Nebraska State Fair presented a Lifesaving Award to off-duty officers Derek Bosler (Stanton County), Donovan Fowler (Hall County) and Larry Lucas (Hall County) at its December board meeting for promptly administering CPR during a choking emergency on Aug. 29. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ Donations for the Grand Island Christmas Cheer campaign have surpassed $16,000, with $2,550 going to Heartland United Way Toy Collection + Toys for Tots distribution, showing strong local support for holiday relief efforts. The Grand Island Independent

- ➤ Grand Island sisters Eva and Jenna Heidelk graduated together from UNK's winter commencement in Kearney, earning bachelor's degrees in business administration; Eva began at UNK-Lincoln and plans to open a play café while Jenna manages social media and aspires to run her own business. - ➤ City offices and select facilities will remain closed for Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays. Jackrabbit Run Golf Course is closed from tomorrow (Dec. 24) through Jan. 4 while the Public Library and Community Fieldhouse have reduced hours, and regular office hours resume on Jan. 5. - ➤ The Grand Island Police Department advised shoppers to be cautious during last-minute Christmas shopping today as crowded stores and holiday traffic may increase risks (especially near busy intersections). KSNB
- ➤ Nebraska’s DHHS is planning to cut caregiver hours from 112 to 40 a week (public comments are accepted until Jan. 5) as caregivers warn that the new rules, set to go into effect July 1, 2026, may force families to consider institutional care. KSNB
- ➤ Today, 18 new troopers were sworn in at the State Capitol in Lincoln after 22 weeks of training. Standout recruits earned awards and will join veteran troopers in further training, while Camp 73 starts January 5 + Camp 74 applications open in March. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ Governor Jim Pillen signed an order that temporarily lifts federal hours-of-service rules for commercial drivers hauling residential heating fuels in Nebraska — the waiver takes effect immediately and runs until Jan. 3 at 11:59 p.m. to meet growing fuel demand. KSNB
- ➤ Governor Jim Pillen expressed support for Union Pacific’s merger with Norfolk Southern after the companies filed an application with the Surface Transportation Board (STB). He said the merger is expected to add 500 managerial jobs at Union Pacific’s Omaha headquarters and boost Nebraska’s role as a transportation hub. Central Nebraska Today
