  • Grand Island plumbers advise homeowners to let faucets drip and use heat tape as temperatures drop below freezing to prevent burst pipes and costly repairs — experts warn that indoor and outdoor plumbing need extra care during winter and local suppliers have stocked up on fittings for increased demand.  KSNB
  • MDM Pest & Termite Control employees and local community members donated over $7,000 to the GIPD Santa Cop Program for children in need yesterday in Grand Island.  KSNB
  • YWCA Grand Island received a $300,000 challenge grant from John and Dianne Scott to renovate the former Starr Elementary site and boost its childcare capacity. The grant will match donations to the Building Better Futures campaign from Dec. 4 to July 1, doubling support for local families.  Central Nebraska Today

  • Grand Island Public Library is offering free winter programs for kids, teens and families including Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 13 at 9:30 a.m., a Teen Anime Club on Dec. 16 and a gingerbread house building session on Dec. 22, with registration required for some events (call 308-385-5333).  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Island City Council signed a memorandum on Tuesday with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to move forward on transforming Camp Augustine into a state park south of town and began contract talks with Woodsonia for the Good Life District — a $45 million project offering fishing, camping, and kayaking.  Nebraska TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Grand Island’s CHI Health St. Francis earned a prestigious five-star rating and a spot on the Forbes Top Hospitals 2026 list (the only Nebraska hospital to achieve this), highlighting strong quality, safety, and patient outcomes.  KSNB

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On Dec. 9, the City Council approved two resolutions to let Woodsonia Real Estate move forward with its Veteran's Village project using Good Life District funds. City Staff will now negotiate a development contract that integrates revised plans featuring an expanded Aquatics Center - a key element of the project.  Central Nebraska Today

  • Nebraska men's basketball matched its best start in school history after beating Wisconsin 90-60 at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday. The Huskers, led by a double-double from Rienk Mast, will meet No. 13 Illinois on Saturday (tipoff at 3 p.m.).  Central Nebraska Today
