EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Grand Island Public Schools were notified by the Nebraska Department of Education that a miscalculation resulted in an extra $5 million in state aid this school year and will lead to about $5 million less next school year. Superintendent Matt Fisher said—student programming and staffing will remain unaffected—as the district plans to use cash reserves and reallocate funds to cover the shortfall. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ The Nebraska Department of Education released the state report card on November 26, showing that all Grand Island Public Schools grew in math and English Language Arts while 13 schools improved in science and chronic absenteeism dropped for 455 students — the graduation rate fell from 85% to 76% after a new enrollment system for English learners was put in place. The district expects the graduation rate to rebound as the new system takes effect in future school years. Central Nebraska Today

- ➤ Indoor professional football is coming back to Grand Island as the Arena League names the city a new market, with NFL Hall-of-Famer Tim Brown scheduled to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4 at the Heartland Events Center + the return marks the first indoor game in the city since 2019.
