- ➤ Grand Island Public Library upgraded its NewsBank subscription so that cardholders could access free, full-color digital editions of The Grand Island Independent starting with the Saturday, January 11 edition. Cardholders with a valid library card can use clipping tools to save articles and read the latest local news on the library’s digital platform. KSNB
- ➤ Sara Frias, facilitator at Community Connections, was honored by the Buffalo County Community Partners Board with the Above and Beyond Volunteer Award for her work in connecting residents to vital local resources — her initiatives in housing advocacy and support have strengthened community ties across central Nebraska. - ➤ Grocery stores were busy Wednesday as families picked up key ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner — many visited multiple stores to find staples like smoked ham and pie supplies while noting the crowds were manageable. KSNB
- ➤ The Nebraska State Fair announced it has earned 14 international awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions, including seven first-place, five second-place and two third-place honors for its 2025 event. - ➤ Usher Media announced a deal to buy six radio stations and a news website that serve Kearney, Hastings (and Grand Island) while filing an FCC transfer application soon. - ➤ A Grand Island chiropractic business donated funds to help Texas flood relief after fixing its Diers Avenue location in June—Dr. Scott Rief said the donation was motivated by the business's own experience and reports that the floods killed several people and left thousands homeless. - ➤ Shoppers crowded local grocery stores on Wednesday—families hurried to make final preparations for Thanksgiving dinner ahead of the holiday. KSNB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Nebraska Department of Education released the 2024–2025 AQuESTT data showing school performance—Grand Island Public Schools earned a good rating with 42% of students proficient in English Language Arts, 48% in math, and 71% in science. The district said a new enrollment model for its high percentage of English Language Learners led to a 76% graduation rate and a 3% dropout rate, and it expects improvements in the future. - ➤ The Nebraska Department of Education released NSCAS scores on Wednesday showing science proficiency rose six points over last year while English and math scores remained flat. Lincoln Public Schools reported more than a 12% gain in eighth grade science scores and Education Commissioner Dr. Brian Maher called the increase significant, crediting improved learning materials and classroom instruction. - ➤ The Two Rivers Public Health Department reported that two additional community members died from COVID-19 complications this respiratory season—raising the total to five deaths.
