COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Nebraska reached a record 100 active matches under Executive Director Christine Haba’s renewed leadership since May—this milestone comes as the organization expanded wraparound support through new initiatives like Bigs with Badges and pilot small-group mentoring, and strengthened outreach in Hall, Hamilton, Merrick and Howard Counties.  Central Nebraska Today

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hargis House Woman’s Club is hosting a Holiday Tour of Homes — a local event on Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — to raise funds for restoring the historic Hargis House as six homeowners open their doors to ticket holders.  Central Nebraska Today

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA projects that 6.54 million residents of the West North Central region will travel at least 50 miles from home this Thanksgiving period from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1—an increase of 1.8% over last year. Most residents are expected to drive while air and other modes will serve a smaller number.  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Brian Caspar at Engleman Elementary School has been named Nebraska Elementary P.E. Teacher of the Year for his over 20 years of inspiring students—he said the award honors the kids and the school that helped shape him.  KSNB
  • Grand Island Public Library is starting Thanksgiving week with a free sled dog presentation by Sophia the Alaskan husky and musher Karen Land on November 23 at 1:30 p.m. The library will hold a board game night on November 24, a LEGO challenge on November 25, and a Thanksgiving storytime and craft on November 26—then close November 27 and 28 for the holiday.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island Senior High staged Shrek the Musical this fall and held auditions for a young ensemble featuring around 100 students in grades 4-8—helping build a connection between younger performers and the high school cast. Director Katherine Welk said the program gives students a chance to develop skills that may encourage a future in theater.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kearney County officials in Minden launched an online survey to collect ideas for repairing the rust-damaged courthouse dome that has made the room below unsafe. Assessor Jennifer Pittner said the project may involve installing internal scaffolding and fundraising to secure grants—residents can submit suggestions through Nov 30.  KSNB
