- ➤ The 4th Street Business Improvement District—in partnership with the Multicultural Coalition, Grand Island Creative District, and Telemundo/Fiesta 94.5—is hosting Calaveritas en la Cuatro, a family-friendly Halloween event on Tuesday, Oct 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. Local businesses will hand out candy while kids explore a Touch-a-Truck experience with vehicles from first responders and crime stoppers. - ➤ On Friday, Project Connect returned to Grand Island with a one-stop event where more than 60 groups offered free help for homelessness, money problems and health issues. Residents got services like legal aid and medical care in one location—this setup helped cut long wait times at other agencies. KSNB

CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Sculptor Benjamin Victor is making a tribute to honor the Pawnee people at the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island—commissioned by the museum foundation and funded by the Wilson Family. - ➤ West Lawn Elementary held a Family STEAM Night in September where students, families, and volunteers enjoyed science experiments, math games, art projects, and pizza. - ➤ Forty first-year students have been chosen to join the Peter Kiewit Foundation Engineering Academy cohort at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Engineering — including several from Central Nebraska — and they have begun their studies. The Grand Island Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Grand Island invites the community to a Chaplain Pinning Ceremony—honoring chaplains who support first responders and residents—that will be followed by a small reception for attendees to show their gratitude. The event will take place on November 19 at 4:30 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center on Public Safety Drive. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ The Nebraska Public Service Commission ordered Roberts Seed, Inc. in Axtell to cease and desist all grain dealer and warehouse operations after an Oct. 20 inspection showed the company lacked proper licenses — officials said a formal complaint will be filed and civil penalties may follow, noting a similar offense in 2018. - ➤ Today, the Central Platte NRD Board approved an interlocal agreement with Lower Loup and Upper Big Blue NRDs for a three-year vadose study to track how fertilizer moves through the soil to protect groundwater quality. The board also approved a new director for Subdistrict 3 through December 2026 and a maintenance building project with a $6,666 change order—costs that the NRDs will share according to the plan. - ➤ Two local women shared their breast cancer stories and now help run the Forever Pink Foundation — offering local support and resources. - ➤ Cole Bauer, a UNK senior from Grand Island, balanced his role as a long snapper with work as a phlebotomist and an internship at an ophthalmology clinic before graduating in May through the Kearney Health Opportunities Program. He will begin professional training at UNMC in Kearney as he plans to remain in rural Nebraska to improve health care access. Central Nebraska Today
