COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A selection of stories from October 23 showed local weekend events, a topping off ceremony at Hastings College Dorm, and the Grand Island literacy council helping immigrants learn English amid resource challenges. Also, Aaron Manning faced his second parole hearing after more than 20 years for an attempted murder conviction — and a Grand Island businessman pleaded guilty to wire fraud for taking money for 12 uncompleted jobs.  KSNB
  • Grand Island couple Mari Paramo and Greg Zoul began setting up a spectacular Halloween display at 2421 Commerce Avenue early in October—featuring a graveyard, clowns, skeletons and more—that will be tweaked until Halloween as children and neighbors enjoy the festive scene near Stolley Park Elementary.  Central Nebraska Today
  • St. Leo’s Parish in Grand Island held its 21st Annual Coat Drive on Thursday—continuing its tradition of support in the community.  KSNB
  • The Hall County Ag. Committee handed out lunches to farmers to show appreciation—supporting local agriculture efforts.  KSNB
  • Hundreds of residents received free haircuts and health care as more than 60 providers offered vital services at Project Connect at Fonner Park on Thursday—helping those in need with no cost.  The Grand Island Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Equitable Bank will soon break ground on its new headquarters in the growing Prairie Commons District—this new project marks a major step in its expansion.  KSNB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Community College hosted a Criminal Justice in Action Day on Tuesday for about 100 high school students from 19 schools who learned about law enforcement careers through hands-on activities such as a crime scene investigation at Horandy Crimehouse and a police K9 demonstration by the Grand Island Police Department. The Hall County Department of Corrections also led a corrections demonstration (internships may be offered after graduation) to show students different career paths.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nebraska Public Service Commission ordered Roberts Seed, Inc. in Axtell to immediately cease all grain dealer and warehouse operations—this followed an Oct. 20 inspection that found the company stored and bought grain without proper licensing. The PSC plans to file a formal complaint so that the company must justify avoiding civil penalties.  Nebraska TV
