  • Local4 reported four key items for October 21 — Hastings officials discussed the future of two vacant properties, police cited three people in connection with a vandalized Webb Plaza mural, Start Over Rover promoted pet adoptions, and local foundations donated funds to assist a nonprofit.  KSNB
  • Local groups funded Choice Family Health Care to keep offering STI testing and women's health services—while police cited three suspects after a mural at Webb Plaza was vandalized and authorities continue to search for a missing 9-year-old girl with ties to Nebraska.   • A Danish Bakery is expanding in Grand Island by opening a new location sometime in mid-November—further details have not been released.  KSNB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Board President Kelly Henry said the Epic Discovery Center capital campaign is 77% funded. The building next to Ryder Park is nearing completion with construction set to finish in November — paving the way for a spring opening.  KSNB
  • Three Dog Night will perform at Heartland Events Center on Feb. 12, 2026 at 7 p.m.—Ambrosia and John Ford Coley will join them for a live rock show. Tickets will go on presale Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. with code CELEBRATE26 and then general tickets will be available Oct. 24 at 10 a.m.  Nebraska TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the Nebraska State Fair, veterinary students from the University of Nebraska gain hands-on experience caring for animals and assisting with deliveries at Fonner Park’s Tractor Supply Birthing Pavilion — where they also educate visitors on livestock care. The 11-day program strengthens practical veterinary skills and enhances agricultural literacy through partnerships with local professionals.  Central Nebraska Today
  • About 100 students from 19 schools visited Central Community College on Tuesday for Criminal Justice in Action Day—where they took part in a crime scene investigation, armored vehicle and drone demonstrations, and a mock court. Grand Island Police Department apprentice Asia Mason said the event helped students see different criminal justice careers and learn how law enforcement agencies work together—fostering a clear view of the field.  Nebraska TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The University of Nebraska–Lincoln added 21 weather stations to the Nebraska Mesonet this year with $1.48 million from federal and local agencies — raising the network total to 94. Manager Ruben Behnke said the team will add more stations and aims to reach 200 in the next few years — a plan that will help farmers plan irrigation and assist emergency managers in disaster relief.  KSNB

HEALTH NEWS

  • CHI Health is hosting three free educational sessions—Breathe Easier: Understanding Lung Cancer Screening and Treatment—to teach about low-dose CT screening, with events scheduled for Oct 30 at CHI Health St. Francis, Nov 12 at CHI Health Good Samaritan, and Nov 17 at Kearney Public Library. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Nebraska with 1,260 new cases and 720 deaths projected this year.  Nebraska TV
