- ➤ Grand Island first responders are hosting the second annual Halloween with Heroes event on October 30 from 6-8 p.m. at Fonner Park Sheep Barn to offer a free trunk-or-treat where families can meet police, firefighters, and paramedics (and enjoy themed trunks, booths, giveaways, and a chance to see emergency vehicles). - ➤ The Haunted Halloween Express is returning to Stolley Park for a family-friendly train ride—offering spooky fun and safe scares for all ages. KSNB
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Grand Island's new Target store is set to hire 200 employees and will offer a food-forward shopping experience that surprises first-time visitors—store director Eryn Larsen noted that shoppers did not expect the store to be so large. The Grand Island Independent
- ➤ A Business After Hours event held Oct. 16 celebrated the Legacy 34 Apartments at Prairie District, cohosted by the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Corporation. The mixed-use development includes 315 apartments, five carriage houses and 120 home lots—plans that aim to boost local housing near the Grand Island Area Regional Medical Center. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Diana Stephenson, a senior at Grand Island Senior High, was named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program—placing her among the top students and paving the way for her future in medical studies. The Grand Island Independent
- ➤ Sunrise Middle School hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday for its renovated athletic field — the field now has a new artificial turf surface and an improved track. The upgrades will let the school host football, soccer and track events on campus and lead to plans for more parking and better traffic flow. KSNB
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska Extension educator Brenda Aufdenkamp advises gardeners to harvest ripening tomatoes and squash (even green ones) before the first hard freeze and to wash, core, and store them in freezer bags (keeping them viable for up to nine months). Nebraska TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City leaders have continued work on the Good Life District since summer 2024—efforts include updates to community spaces and retail areas that aim to boost local business. Officials expect further progress to be announced soon. The Grand Island Independent
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Choice Family Health Care got financial support from the Bud and Gloria Wolbach Foundation (with help from the Greater Grand Island Community Foundation) to keep its STI screening and education program going after state funds were cut. Executive director Ryan King (the agency head) said the support shows the community is working to lower the spread of infections in central Nebraska. Nebraska TV
- ➤ Two nurses — Jennifer Tobias and Whitney Cole — from CHI Health Good Samaritan received the 40 Under 40 Award from the Nebraska Nurses Association on Oct. 3. They were honored for their strong leadership and positive impact on patient care and their communities. Central Nebraska Today

- ➤ The Harlem Globetrotters will perform at Heartland Events Center in Grand Island on March 18 at 7 p.m.—tickets will go on sale Monday, October 20 at 10 a.m.—and they will debut their new 100 Year jerseys as they face the Washington Generals. KSNB
