COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Guillermo Pena took down racist banners and stomped on them in Grand Island and now fears his actions may lead to more trouble for the city’s immigrant community.  The Grand Island Independent
  • During October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Grand Island businesses are stepping up to support Willow Rising, a local nonprofit that helps domestic violence survivors & provides essential services.  KSNB
  • Hall County farmers received boxed lunches as part of the Feed the Farmers initiative at the Aurora Cooperative Grand Island Terminal while meals will also be delivered at the Green Plains Ethanol Plant in Wood River today. The program, which began five years ago, aims to support farmers and inform the community about agriculture’s vital role in keeping food on tables (a modest token of gratitude during a busy harvest season).  Nebraska TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nebraska students achieved a composite ACT score of 19.2, the highest among states testing every student—scores in English, reading, math and science also showed small improvements over last year.  KSNB
  • Wayne State College partnered with the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce to expand its Career Scholars Program as increased scholarship donations will boost the 2027 cohort to 40 students from nine this year. The college is working with developers to build housing for 25 interns by August—this effort aims to grow the local workforce.  Nebraska TV
  • Nebraska's average ACT score among graduating seniors increased slightly in 2025 — a reversal of the previous trend of declining scores.  The Grand Island Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Parks and Recreation crews planted 10 free trees in Broadwell Park on Wednesday morning as part of the Ten Free Trees program from the Nebraska Forest Service and Nebraska Statewide Arboretum—replacing trees lost from the removal of unhealthy ones. The program aims to boost tree diversity and help strengthen community forests—an effort to counter challenges like extreme weather and pests.  Central Nebraska Today

  • Crews from the Parks and Recreation Department planted 10 free trees in Broadwell Park on Wednesday morning as part of a state program.  The Grand Island Independent

  • The Huskers will travel to Minneapolis to face the Golden Gophers Friday at 7 p.m.—the team will try to stay in the AP Top 25 after last week’s win over Maryland and reports of a head coach vacancy at Penn State.  KSNB
  • At a prep volleyball game Tuesday night, Columbus Scotus swept Grand Island Central Catholic 25-16, 27-25, 25-18 — following a pregame ceremony where GICC honored legendary coach Sharon Zavala for her 49-year career with 1,177 wins, 11 state titles and 35 tournament appearances.  Central Nebraska Today
