- ➤ Project Connect is asking local residents to donate hygiene supplies for its one-day event at Pinnacle Bank Expo at Fonner Park on Oct 23. The steering committee needs 200 more kits—donations will be accepted at Hope Harbor from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Oct 17. KSNB
- ➤ The Hall County Agricultural Committee provided free meals to 75 local farmers and ag workers Monday at the Aurora Cooperative Grand Island Terminal—supporting those who help feed our community. A second Feed the Farmers event will offer 75 meals to local producers at Green Plains Ethanol in Wood River on Thursday. KSNB

- ➤ At least five businesses are open in Grand Island's Prairie District (with two more planned) as local owners work to expand services. The Grand Island Independent
- ➤ Target opened its new store on Oct. 12 at 3400 W. 13th St. in Grand Island—a busy event marked by full parking and long lines. The 148,000‑square‑foot store employs about 140 people and offers groceries, essentials, Apple at Target, CVS Pharmacy and Starbucks Café while providing same‑day delivery and drive‑up pickup. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Starr Elementary in Grand Island now awards two traveling trophies to classes that show good behavior in common areas—one for hallways and a DIY giant spoon for classes observed by specials teachers. Principal Selena Valentine said the simple incentive helps recognize students' efforts and builds a positive school environment. KSNB
- ➤ Walnut Middle School celebrated its 100th anniversary with an open house held October 12th that featured a Museum Experience with historical exhibits and vintage memorabilia (a look back at a century of school history). The celebration will continue with a 7th and 8th grade football game on October 16th and a volleyball showcase on October 17th (events planned through the week). Central Nebraska Today

- ➤ The Grand Island Fire Department launched its Friday Fire Facts video series on October 10 to keep fire safety in residents' minds after Fire Prevention Week—each short video features Fire Chief Cory Schmidt answering common questions and explaining simple safety steps. The videos are posted on the city’s social media channels to help people stay informed about emergency preparedness. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ Game and Parks announced a statewide youth season for pheasant, quail and partridge hunting on Oct. 18-19 for hunters 15 and younger. Resident youth can hunt without a permit while nonresident youth need a small game permit and habitat stamp, and Special Youth Hunt sites allow one adult per youth with a daily limit of two rooster pheasants for the youth and one for the accompanying adult. - ➤ Independent U.S. Senate candidate Dan Osborn criticized Senator Pete Ricketts for his silence and support of a $20 billion bailout that hurts Nebraska farmers because it lets Argentina drop soybean export taxes. Osborn said the bailout—making foreign soybeans cheaper—forces local farmers to lose money and urged Ricketts to end further funding. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ The Merrick County Sheriff’s Office in Grand Island has welcomed a new service dog named Vedo to assist Deputy Parker. Vedo is a 1.5-year-old Belgian Malinois certified in tracking, apprehension, and narcotics detection — purchased through Deputy Parker’s fundraising efforts with support from Hornady Manufacturing. - ➤ Nebraska coach Matt Rhule expressed disappointment after James Franklin was fired as Penn State coach and dismissed talk of leaving his job during a Monday news conference in Lincoln. He stressed his focus on rebuilding his team with Troy Dannen while planning for upcoming games against Minnesota. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ After a recent true road game, the Nebraska Cornhuskers are set to play Minnesota in Minneapolis at 7 p.m. Friday while holding a 5-1 record, and head coach Matt Rhule (PSU alum) is expected to address Penn State job rumors at his Monday press conference. KSNB
- ➤ The schedule for the 19th annual Heartland Hoops Classic was released Monday for the tournament at the Heartland Events Center on Feb. 14 — high school teams will start playing at 8:30 a.m. and top state tournament contenders are set to compete. KSNB
