COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Grand Island groups Hope Harbor, Willow Rising, and YWCA announced they will join the national Week Without Violence from October 20—24 to support survivors of domestic violence by inviting artists to submit work that highlights safe beginnings for mothers and families. On October 20 at Arts & Drafts, a group painting event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—including cocktails, guided sessions, presentations, survivor testimony, and a live auction to benefit shelter and advocacy programs.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The S.A.F.E Center, which serves five counties in south central Nebraska, launched a fundraising campaign after a fire destroyed its emergency shelter and is asking the community for support to help rebuild the facility.  KSNB
  • Crossroads Mission Avenue is hosting Conversations on a Bench to share personal stories from homeless individuals—an effort aimed at changing common stereotypes.  KSNB
  • Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct 6 through Oct 12 as local fire departments share fire safety tips to help families protect their homes; the event highlights risks like faulty wiring and missing smoke alarm batteries — key factors in fire injuries.   • Local computer stores warn that Microsoft will end security updates for Windows 10 on Oct. 14—leaving millions vulnerable.  KSNB

CRIME NEWS

  • Guillermo Peña removed two hate signs posted under the Eddy Street underpass near Grand Island’s Hispanic business district — police said the banners violated city code and would have been taken down regardless — and mayor Roger Steele condemned the display while Peña plans to repaint them with unity messages at a community protest later this month.  KSNB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, October 10, Hastings Public Schools said the federal shutdown has not immediately affected its funding for special education, Title 1 programs, and free lunch services while parents stay concerned about any future impact. Grand Island Public Schools said its operations continue as expected—with contingencies in place if the shutdown extends.  Nebraska TV
  • At the Oct. 9 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Matt Fisher presented the district’s five-year plan '80. 90. 100: Empowering Student Success' that sets goals for academic growth, improved attendance and post-high school planning for every student. CFO Virgil Harden detailed a $1 million renovation of the 60-year-old planetarium at the senior high school — with additional board actions on a pilot math curriculum and union contract recognition also approved.  Central Nebraska Today

  • Mayor Roger Steele condemned offensive banners with anti-immigrant messages displayed on the Eddy and Sycamore Street underpasses after a citizen removed one reading DEPORT INVADERS, PATRIOTFRONT.US — Grand Island Police Chief Dean Elliott said the white sheets were unauthorized.  Nebraska TV
