- ➤ Prairie District is hosting its first Fall Fest on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—a free festival at 3568 Innate Ln that offers seasonal treats, interactive activities, and a chance for local businesses and families to connect. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ The Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the Haunted Halloween Express at Stolley Park Railroad on Oct. 17 from 6-10 p.m. and on Oct. 18 from 5-10 p.m.—tickets cost $4.50 per person for ages three and up with free rides for children two and under while families enjoy a train ride with festive decorations, face painting and concessions. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Eighty eight high school marching bands competed in the Harvest of Harmony band competition in Grand Island Saturday morning and winners were announced—Kearney for Class AA, GI Northwest for Class A, Aurora for Class B, Alma for Class C, and Fullerton for Class D, with Aurora also earning the Best Overall Parade Award for Classes A and B and Fullerton for Classes C and D. - ➤ Country artist Ian Munsick will perform his Eagle Flies Free Tour at the Heartland Events Center on March 3rd—he will be joined by special guests Jake Worthington and Tyler Nance. Tickets will go on sale Friday, October 10th at 10 a.m.—in person and online. KSNB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska Extension is offering the Fundamentals of Feeding the Cow webinar series in November with five sessions on Monday and Thursday evenings from Nov. 3 to Nov. 17 at 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. CT—participants must register by Oct. 20 for one of 40 spots at a $65 fee, which includes a resource notebook and covers topics like nutrient requirements and cost-effective feeding plans. - ➤ Three seniors tied for homecoming royalty at University of Nebraska–Lincoln after an online vote on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2. Grand Island native Claire Kelly was crowned during halftime of the Nebraska-Michigan State game—nearly 10% of ballots were cast—joining Caden Connelly of Lincoln and Ava Hollingsworth of Omaha. - ➤ A field competition took place yesterday at Grand Island Senior High after the annual Harvest of Harmony parade. The event allowed students to test their athletic skills—continuing a local school tradition. KSNB
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen said he is open to redrawing the state's congressional maps mid-decade during an interview amid discussions about shifting political balance for upcoming elections. He explained that while redistricting normally follows the U.S. Census (with current legislative backing low), any change will depend on lawmakers securing enough votes. KSNB
- ➤ Residents can buy a $10 burn permit from Oct. 6 to Oct. 24 at Fire Station #1 or City Hall and must follow rules to keep fires safe. The burn period runs from Oct. 12 to Oct. 25—fires allowed only on private one- and two-family properties with set distance and wind restrictions. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ Grand Island police stationed a sniper on top of the Railroad Town building to guard the Harvest of Harmony parade route on Third Street Saturday—marking the first time they used this measure. Windy conditions prevented drones from flying—so officers used barricades and heavy vehicles to protect the crowd. KSNB
- ➤ Johnstown Road was open to traffic on Monday, Oct 6 after the Nebraska Department of Transportation said Werner Construction removed the barricades from the new intersection while work continued on US-30. Central Nebraska Today
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A Walk to End Alzheimer's was held in Grand Island on Oct.6—local participants walked to raise awareness and support those affected by the disease. KSNB
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Grand Island will host one of six teams in the Diamond Baseball League—set to start play in 2026—and the community is invited to help name the team through a contest. The league will own and operate all teams in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska to bring top-level college competition and family fun to the area. KSNB
