COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Nebraska Community Blood Bank is offering donors the chance to win two 50-yard-line tickets for the Huskers vs. USC game on Nov. 1. Blood donations given between Oct. 6 and Oct. 25 at NCBB centers or drives may help boost low supplies – especially for Type O blood.  Nebraska TV
  • Hope Harbor is asking community volunteers to help with Project Connect 2025 on Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center at Fonner Park—this one-day event will offer free medical, dental, housing, legal, veteran and other services to adults in need while especially seeking bilingual navigators.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The City of Grand Island will close several streets today for the 2025 Harvest of Harmony Parade—closures begin at 4 a.m. and last until the event ends. Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes and remove vehicles from the parade path in time for the celebration.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Chickens from the Aksarben Stock Show are being donated to help families in central Nebraska through a new partnership between the State Fair — Heartland United Way. The 179 birds will be shared with food pantries, backpack programs and shelters in counties including Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Crossroads Mission Avenue will host Conversations on a Bench at the Hastings Mission on 702 W 14th Street from 2 p.m. October 9th until 2 p.m. October 10th to raise awareness about homelessness—director Daniel Buller will livestream conversations and invite community members to watch and donate to support shelter and recovery programs.  KSNB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yesterday, an archive update featured the Harvest of Harmony Parade 2001 along with records from past parades dating back from 2005 through 2012. The update documents a long-running community tradition that highlights local celebrations of harvest and harmony — key moments that have shaped our shared history.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government shutdown has frozen funding for the state WIC Program (Women, Infants, and Children) and many in Grand Island worry about a drop in food aid. Local distributors say the lack of federal dollars may delay new approvals until funding resumes.  KSNB

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alzheimer’s Association invites Grand Island residents to join the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sunday to help fund research and support those affected by the disease — organizers will share registration details soon.  The Grand Island Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • Barr Bulldogs and Walnut Wildcats will mark 100 years of their Crosstown Clash football game on October 16th at Memorial Stadium with a tailgate at 5:00 p.m. and games at 5:30 p.m. for 7th grade and 6:30 p.m. for 8th grade — the event will bring together students, alumni and families to celebrate a century of local tradition.  Central Nebraska Today
