- ➤ Gene Malleck turned 90 and celebrated with about 150 people who cheered as he competed in a free throw contest, mowed his lawn, chopped trees, and made his famous jelly in 100 pint jars—adding to his long history as a pilot and bus driver. - ➤ The Museum of Nebraska Art is opening Cindy Weil: Only Wool on October 9 at its second floor gallery, where Omaha-based artist Cindy Weil will show sculptures made from wool that highlight transformation and local materials — museum members and the press will attend an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with artist remarks at 6 p.m., and the exhibition runs through March 8. - ➤ Nebraska Game and Parks is beginning its annual fall stocking of rainbow trout in ponds and lakes to boost fishing opportunities this season—Grand Island’s Suck’s Lake will receive 500 trout during the week of Oct. 13. Central Nebraska Today
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Grand Island officials approved the county's budget for fiscal years 2025 and 2026 (approved by a vote of 4 to 2 at a special meeting on Sept. 24) which sets the tax asking at $400.03 per $100,000 of property value and raises the operating budget by 2.57 percent with a total tax request of $29,078,344 (including the General Fund, Museum Fund, and Courthouse Bond Fund). - ➤ The Grand Island City Council discussed a study of an indoor/outdoor sports complex today—sparking debate over an unstudied plan for an indoor aquatics center. The Grand Island Independent
- ➤ The Department of Veterans Affairs announced $3 million in grants today to four Nebraska organizations—Northeast Nebraska Community Action Partnership, Central Nebraska Community Action Partnership, Blue Valley Community Action Partnership, and the Ponca Tribe—to help veterans access housing counseling, healthcare, financial planning and other services during fiscal year 2026. - ➤ Nebraska’s paid sick time law takes effect Oct. 1 and requires employers (with 11 or more workers) to offer paid sick leave after 80 hours of work at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked. Employers must also post a notice (effective since Sept. 15) detailing the new requirements. KSNB
