COMMUNITY NEWS

  • VCA hosted a tailgate silent auction in Grand Island to raise funds for low-cost spaying and neutering services for pet families. The event helped community members support affordable pet care—ensuring local pets get the care they need.  KSNB
  • Alexandra Dillon from ESU10 received the Above and Beyond Award from Buffalo County Community Partners for her decades of volunteer work supporting early education and family services—she continues to lead community projects by sharing vital research on brain development.  Central Nebraska Today
  • During Husker Harvest Days, Nebraska and Iowa FFA chapters gathered 15,036 pounds of food from students and show attendees—helping local grocery stores boost the total to 16,241 pounds for food pantries in Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick Counties. Local leaders reported that the donations, sorted by 19 pantries, shelters and backpack programs on Friday, may support those in need for about one month.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The Grand Island Historical Society dedicated a new marker at L.E. Ray Park Friday to honor the 1967 flood that forced evacuations when 14 inches of rain fell from June 7th to June 15th. Sponsored by the Greater Grand Island Community Foundation (marking its 65th anniversary), the project is the largest state historical marker effort ever undertaken and shows how flood safety changes have been made in Grand Island.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Central Platte Natural Resources District Board of Directors will meet on Sept. 25th at 2 p.m. at their office on 215 Kaufman Avenue in Grand Island — they will review the Board Search Committee report, the new office and education center progress, and other agenda items.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Nebraska lawmakers introduced a resolution in May to study skill games that look like slot machines and have contributed to problem gambling. A law from July added a 5% tax on these devices—and 2.5% of that revenue now funds counseling for those affected.  The Grand Island Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Margot Icenogle-Larsen from CASA gave parents tips on how to talk to their children about suicide and urged them to watch for changes such as isolation or not eating well. She advised those in need to call 988 or text HOME to 741741 for help—resources that can guide families through tough times.  Nebraska TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nebraska Football will open conference play this weekend when #21 Michigan visits Lincoln at 2:30 p.m. The Huskers are 3-0 after wins over Cincinnati, Akron and Houston Christian and will face a tough test as Michigan plays without head coach Sherrone Moore after his suspension.  KSNB
  • The Grand Island City Council approved a five-year contract to bring a collegiate baseball team to the community—local fans will soon have a new team to cheer for.  KSNB
