COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Greater Grand Island Community Foundation announced $32,000 in Summer Greater Impact Grants to local nonprofits and community projects on Wednesday, September 3 — funding efforts in health, education and historic preservation, including a historic marker at the Grand Island Public Library.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The 2025 Nebraska State Fair ended with about 700 volunteers who greeted fairgoers, directed parking, and checked guests in. Volunteer coordinator Hayley Roush said the experienced helpers—many of whom train new volunteers—kept the event running smoothly.  KSNB
  • Black Hills Energy announced a $135,000 grant program during National Preparedness Month to help local fire departments buy essential equipment — $30,500 of the funds support Nebraska teams. The Funds for Firefighters program continues to aid both volunteer and professional teams in improving emergency response.  Central Nebraska Today

  • Every Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m., entrepreneurs gather at the Central Community College Entrepreneurship Center at 407 W. Third St. in Grand Island to share ideas and listen to presentations—this group is the fourth 1 Million Cups community in Nebraska and has drawn about 30 attendees since it began in October 2024.  The Grand Island Independent

CRIME NEWS

  • On Aug. 29, Grand Island police responded to a report at a laundromat on N. Pine St.—two gambling slot machines were broken into and emptied of cash, and the investigation is ongoing.  Central Nebraska Today

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Nebraska Corn Board and Nebraska Corn Growers Association will welcome visitors to Husker Harvest Days from Sept. 9-11 in Grand Island—this farm show will let attendees learn about projects to boost Nebraska corn and sign up for NeCGA membership. Visitors will meet experts at the Ag Commodities Building on Main Street to learn more.  Central Nebraska Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fonner Park officials partnered with Nebraska Game — Parks and the Grand Island Police Department to address resident Canada geese that damaged the racetrack after overseeding the infield. They installed fencing around the pond and used sound deterrents like propane noise cannons from Tuesday, September 2 through October 31 to reduce property damage and safety concerns.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Island Police will conduct child restraint safety operations this fall at local elementary schools to review proper car seat, booster seat or seat belt use—operations will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 16 through October 28.  Central Nebraska Today
