- ➤ Grand Island Public Library will celebrate Welcoming Week September 12-21 with a Makerspace Connect Program on September 16 from 6-7:30 p.m.—attendees will create crafts, tour the makerspace, and view the Then and Now: The Flavors of Grand Island exhibit that highlights the city's immigrant heritage. - ➤ The Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island welcomed over 154,000 guests in its first five days, with Saturday drawing over 53,000—up 23% from last year—that boosted vendor sales under clear skies and 75-degree weather. Schneider, a 35-year-old from Axtell, was arrested on seven counts—including three for motor vehicle homicide—after a fiery multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 6/34 and Road T in Phelps County on August 15, with law enforcement linking his charges to the deaths of three men and injuries to another driver. - ➤ A carnival worker from Wade Shows Carnival was arrested Thursday at the Nebraska State Fair for using an electronic device to commit sexual assault—Todd Brown, 46, is in Hall County Jail on a $100,000 bond with a court date set for Sept. 18 and officials stated that no fair guests were involved. - ➤ Grand Island Senior High will stage Shrek: The Musical at the GISH Auditorium this fall with performances on October 30th, November 1st at 7:00 p.m., and November 2nd at 2:00 p.m.—tickets go on sale mid-September. - ➤ Nebraska drivers will face higher fines for speeding from Sept. 3 as the Legislature revised state laws and Gov. Pillen signed the bill on June 4. Fines will be $50 for 1-5 mph over, $75 for 6-9 mph, $125 for 10-14 mph, $200 for 15-19 mph, $300 for 20-34 mph and $400 for 35 mph or more (penalties double in work or school zones).
