CULTURE NEWS

  • More than 500 quilts are on display at the Nebraska State Fair’s Pinnacle Bank Expo Center, where Lynette Koelzer of Wood River took five months to create her Best of Show quilt using over 6000 feet of thread and patterns from Ohio and Oklahoma. Janice Stuhmer organizes volunteers in white gloves to answer visitors' questions as they view quilts in many classes and sizes—showing art for all ages.  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Island Senior High students were honored as AP Scholars for their strong performance on advanced placement courses. The school recognized many students for their academic excellence.  The Grand Island Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Jim Pillen and Rhonda Lahm joined a ribbon cutting on Aug. 22 for the new DMV Service Center at 3529 S. Locust St.—the 12,000 square foot facility now reduces wait times to about 1 minute, 20 seconds and serves around 150 customers daily.  Central Nebraska Today
  • At a special City Council meeting Thursday night, City Attorney Kari Fisk proposed hiring an extra attorney for the Legal Department and Police Chief Kevin Denney advocated reclassifying a police administrator role—efforts aimed at addressing rising workload and delays. Council members questioned the cost increases and internal equity of the proposals and took no action at the meeting.  The Grand Island Independent
  • Nebraska State Patrol troopers have been working this week to keep the Nebraska State Fair safe at Fonner Park in Grand Island, where the fair began on Friday and runs through Sept. 1. Troopers will patrol the fairgrounds and have set up a booth in the Expo Building for visitors who need assistance.  KSNB

  • CHI Health St. Francis Regional Cancer Center announced that Dr. Aria Shakeri joined its staff as a new oncologist. Four local child care advocates were selected for a cohort and will work to improve child care services in the area.  The Grand Island Independent
