At the Nebraska State Fair, Scoops Ice Cream Parlor now offers a new cotton candy flavor as volunteers serve ice cream to raise funds for Heartland United Way and 20 local agencies—located outside the Cattle Barn.
The event runs from today until Sept. 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and volunteers are still needed to support the effort.
Darla Smith, a New Mexico woman wanted by Texas law enforcement, was arrested in Grand Island last week when police stopped her stolen vehicle carrying burglary tools and multiple firearms—she is held on a 10% bond for false reporting and other charges while authorities search for a male suspect at large.
The Grand Island City Council debated plans to turn Camp Augustine into a state park and add a hike-and-bike trail, but some members questioned the trail’s value until state action is taken (with council member Doug Lanfear calling it a 'sidewalk to nowhere').
Mayor Roger Steele and Game and Parks officials said the project could boost local tourism if proper funds are raised.
Grand Island City Council approved two redevelopment plans near Rae Road: one for a new Feel Fit fitness center covering 17,000 square feet that will break ground later this summer and finish in 2026, and another for a Grand Prairie apartment complex with 219 units that will begin in October and be completed in 2027. Developers seek Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds with estimated costs of about $7.3 million for the fitness center and $47.2 million for the apartment complex.
