CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Island Police investigated a fraudulent order for $5,890.88 at Miller Tires using a stolen credit card between Aug. 18 and Aug. 19 (employees caught the fraud before fulfillment) and the investigation continues.  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nebraska 4-H members are getting ready for the State Fair from August 22 through September 1 where over 4,000 exhibits and animal entries will show their hard work — a special 4-H Day on August 24 will feature ice cream, a photo booth, and volunteer honors at 2:30 p.m. Nebraska Extension said it will add new online modules through its Clover platform to help youth build skills.  Nebraska TV
  • Nominations for the 20th Annual Kim West Dinsdale Excellence in Teaching Award are open from September 2 to 30, 2025—any student, parent, colleague, or community member can nominate a Hall County teacher or counselor. The award honors outstanding educators, and the winner will receive $5,000 along with special recognition at a surprise ceremony.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Aug. 19, City Council heard the Parks and Recreation Department’s proposed budget featuring four major projects—Island Oasis Water Park renovation, Ryder Park baseball field improvements, Stolley Park train area upgrade, and South Locust Street Trail—totaling about $28.5 million. The plan shows rising personnel and operating costs and a request for a new park maintenance worker, while some council members expressed concerns about the spending.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Today, Nebraska Game and Parks released the 2025-2026 Public Access Atlas - a guide that lists over one million acres of lands for hunting, trapping and fishing. Printed copies are available at headquarters and will soon be at district offices and permit vendors, while an interactive atlas is offered online.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District will lower the water level of Johnson Lake by about eight feet starting September 2 to prepare for a new boat ramp at Bullhead Point near Medo’s Resort — the work is expected to be finished between September 20 and 27 with the lake refilling in early October; cabin owners are advised to contact Central for permit guidance for any shoreline work.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Today at 8 a.m., the five newest Grand Island Fire Department recruits will march from Fire Station 1 at 409 East Fonner Park Road to City Hall at 100 East 1st Street in full firefighter gear to mark the end of eight weeks of academy training plus a brief reception in City Council chambers. They will continue on-the-job training with fire engine and ambulance duties for four more months.  Central Nebraska Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • On August 6, CMS released its 2025 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings and awarded 4 stars to CHI Health Good Samaritan and CHI Health St. Francis while CHI Health St. Francis Skilled Care earned 5 stars in Nursing Homes — the hospitals are among only seven in Nebraska to earn such honors.  Central Nebraska Today
