COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Twenty builders worked Tuesday and Wednesday to construct an 8-by-16-foot summer kitchen at Stolley Park using lumber measured at 2-by-4 inches and 1-inch planks—materials rarely used today—while adding wood shake shingles that match the historic Stolley House; the Historical Society supplied the materials and the project planned to have primer applied on Thursday with a chimney to be built next. This community effort brought together contractors from various trades under the guidance of local historical leaders.  The Grand Island Independent

  • Today remains very hot in Grand Island as a Heat Advisory is in effect with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and heat indices above 100. Tonight will bring scattered rain showers and a chance of thunder—tomorrow may see more storms before skies clear on Monday.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Adrian Smith has extended the application window for the 2025-26 Youth Advisory Council—current high school sophomores, juniors and seniors can apply until Aug. 31.  The Grand Island Independent
  • The new Grand Island DMV service center (3529 S. Locust St.) will open Wednesday and will operate weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. as it offers increased capacity and shorter wait times.  The Grand Island Independent

  • Tory Pittman III, a five-star Class of 2027 safety from Omaha Central, committed to Nebraska Friday—boosting the Huskers as he joins quarterback Trae Taylor. He had 54 tackles and three interceptions in 10 games last season and also shined in track events.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The Nebraska Cornhuskers signed five-star safety Tory Pittman III from Omaha, the state's top recruit for the class of 2027 ranked 16th nationally. He chose Nebraska over offers from LSU, Oregon and Michigan.  KSNB
