ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Scanner traffic reported a structure fire near the intersection of Highway 2 — Webb Road on the northside of Grand Island at 4:45 a.m. on August 5.  KSNB
  • Early Tuesday morning, Grand Island Fire Department responded to a fire at the former Grand Island Veterans Home, which started in the boiler room — no injuries were reported and cleanup operations continue while investigators work to determine the cause.  Nebraska TV
  • A structure fire broke out at the Old Grand Island Veterans Home on the northside of Grand Island at 4:32 a.m. Tuesday—firefighters quickly put out the blaze.  KSNB

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Nebraska State Historical Marker honoring pioneer attorney O.A. Abbott was dedicated at Grand Island’s Pioneer Park on Aug. 4 at 3 p.m.—the marker underscores his role as the state’s first Lieutenant Governor and his service as a Civil War veteran. Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele and Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly spoke at the event—sponsored by the Hall County Historical Society and the Hall County Bar Association—to celebrate the community’s largest historical marker project.  Central Nebraska Today

  • Meadowlark Elementary School will change its Accelerated Reader goals for grades 2-5 for the upcoming academic year—new principal Connor Williams said each goal will be set based on the fall STAR assessment—and teachers can adjust them for students with extra needs.  Nebraska TV

  • UNK is updating game day rules for the Sept. 6 home football opener to boost safety with a no re-entry rule and new bag-check policy—alcohol will be sold at games under strict ID checks and a two-drink limit while 5% of revenue helps fund student health programs.  Central Nebraska Today
