COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Central Nebraska Humane Society in Grand Island has paused cat adoptions and volunteer socialization—citing a serious illness among its cats and a recent surge in intakes—and will update the community when more details are known.  KSNB
  • On Monday, a Nebraska Historical Marker honoring O.A. Abbott as Nebraska’s first lieutenant governor was dedicated at Pioneer Park in Grand Island. City officials say Abbott’s work—ranging from law to social progress—helped shape local history.  The Grand Island Independent

CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Island police arrested Angelica Francisco-Pascual at the north Walmart for trying to pass a counterfeit $100 bill—authorities said fake $100s have circulated in the community since early 2024.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Central Platte NRD Board of Directors approved the FY 2025/2026 budget at $31,799,740.74 with a lowered property tax request of $5,347,834.31 at their July 31 meeting—this follows a public hearing and marks a decrease from last year. The board also approved contracts for engineering services, a telemetry project to save 1,162 acre-feet of water, a federal funding application for a pedestrian bridge, and a college scholarship program, and will hold a second public hearing on September 4 to set the tax levy.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island Police completed a high visibility speeding campaign from July 14th to 31st funded by an $8,800 grant—covering 120 hours of overtime—and the operation yielded 1,529 stops with 844 warnings, 549 citations and 281 arrests or violations as officials addressed rising speeding concerns.  Central Nebraska Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • U.S. News & World Report named CHI Health Good Samaritan a High Performing Hospital for knee replacement, stroke and pneumonia and recognized CHI Health St. Francis for pneumonia. The rankings released on July 29 show that only three hospitals outside Lincoln and Omaha earned the honor.  Central Nebraska Today
