  • At the Hall County Fair, a sculpture of Bluey made entirely of donated canned food drew smiles and raised awareness of hunger in Hall County—supporting Project Hunger's efforts to feed local residents after the fair. Bob Braun said fairgoers can also drop off extra food and use the Food Bucks program at Super Saver and Hy-Vee to help families in need.  KSNB

CRIME NEWS

  • Gabriel Contreras was arrested for first-degree assault after he punched a man outside McKinney's Irish Pub last month—witness photos led police to identify him and he will appear in district court on Aug. 5 at 9 a.m.  KSNB

  • Nebraska's Interstate 80 Bicentennial sculptures are nearing their 50th anniversary as a commission plans to nominate the remaining seven pieces to the National Register in anticipation of next year's Semiquincentennial, and the abstract art sparked a heated debate in the 1970s that still divides opinion today.  The Grand Island Independent

  • Grand Island City Council approved an extra $200,000 on Tuesday for the Heartland Events Center—this funding will help pay for needed improvements at the facility.  KSNB
  • The Nebraska Department of Transportation announced that hay harvesting permit applications will be accepted online beginning July 30 at 12:01 a.m. CST — each permit is limited to five miles of roadside hay and requires removal of baled vegetation within 10 days or by September 15 on a first-come, first-served basis.  Central Nebraska Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • CHI Health St. Francis announced that its Emergency Department was awarded the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award — an honor recognizing exceptional leadership and patient care. The award was given on July 23 among 96 departments worldwide and marks the only recognition of its kind in Nebraska.  Central Nebraska Today
