COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Heartland Events Center is set to host the Shop & Skate Craft Vendor Show on Saturday, July 26 to Sunday, July 27, offering a free craft fair and roller skating on the main floor of Eihusen Arena. Visitors will shop local artisan goods and enjoy skating, which costs $7 for adults and $5 for youth (the Hall County Fair nearby adds extra attractions).  Central Nebraska Today

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Nebraska State Fair has been named Rodeo of the Year by the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association for showcasing rural values and youth rodeo excellence. The fair’s high school rodeo event—which features barrel racing, bull riding and other competitions—will be held on September 1 at US Foods Outdoor Arena.  Central Nebraska Today

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Nebraska Department of Labor released preliminary May unemployment rates showing that most central Nebraska counties reported rates below 3 percent while Hall County reported 3.2 percent and the statewide rate was 3.0 percent; the national rate remained at 4.2 percent. Adams County was at 2.8 percent, Buffalo County at 2.5 percent, Dawson County at 2.8 percent, Hamilton County at 2.3 percent, Howard County at 2.7 percent and Merrick County at 2.4 percent.  KSNB
  • The Nebraska Department of Labor said Tuesday that Nebraska's preliminary May unemployment rate stayed at 3.0% seasonally adjusted — a rise of 0.3 percentage points from May last year, while nonfarm employment reached a record high of 1,073,696 with 11,512 jobs added over the month.  KSNB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eleven students at UNL in the Agricultural Education Teaching Program will get a $1,500 scholarship during their student teaching semester from the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation. The award will help them start careers in agriculture and work to meet the need for more agriculture teachers.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nebraska officials are pushing for a law that would ban holding phones while driving (after Iowa’s hands-free law starts next month) to help lower the 251 fatal crashes recorded last year.  KSNB
  • Few drivers in Grand Island are using turn signals at roundabouts, officials said. The Hall County attorney (chief deputy) stressed that proper signal use is required to improve traffic safety.  The Grand Island Independent
