Good morning, Grand Island. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Grand Island hosted its record-breaking Go Big GIVE event on May 1 that raised $2,007,344 for 167 nonprofits across Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick Counties — generous sponsor support added $126,300 to boost funds for human services and education, which received 51% of all donations. Donors will set sail on May 7, 2026 when the next Go Big GIVE returns.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Today the Grand Island Area Farmers Market announced two new programs in partnership with the Center for Rural Affairs to help the community access fresh local food. The Healthy Food Voucher Program runs through July 31 and the market will purchase and donate leftover food to local banks — actions that support both shoppers and area farmers.  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Island Police Department hosted a free Summer Youth Program this week at Barr Middle School to help incoming 6th graders adjust to middle school through fun activities + leadership, teamwork, and communication lessons; future sessions will run June 16–20, July 7–11, and July 14–18 with free lunch and limited space for 40 students.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 10, Grand Island City Council discussed LB707's impact on the Good Life District, noting that the state law now limits local revenue to $5 million annually and prevents expanding district boundaries. City officials and developers plan to amend program rules and move ahead with projects — a sports complex and an aquatics center — before Oct 1.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Dawson County and 11 other counties were designated—by the USDA—as primary natural disaster areas due to an ongoing drought that caused severe conditions for eight or more weeks, which makes local farmers eligible for Farm Service Agency emergency loan assistance within eight months.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Today, Grand Island City Council member Ryan O’Neill discussed new legislative changes for the Good Life District — plans that may shape local development. Separately, the Elsbury family from Doniphan launched the Doniphan Diabetes Dash to honor their son, who was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes on March 22, 2017 — an event that reflects the community’s long-standing commitment to health awareness.  KSNB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nebraska DHHS and FDA warned shoppers after August Egg Company recalled 1.7 million dozen brown eggs due to salmonella contamination which has infected 79 people across 7 states — including 2 in Nebraska and 21 hospitalizations. Buyers should check eggs with sell-by dates from March 4 through June 19 and dispose or return any affected products.  KSNB
