The Grand Island Police Department is starting a free SRO Youth Summer Program for sixth graders this week at Barr Middle School — the camp runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays and is limited to 40 students — families are urged to apply soon.

Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department now accepts team registrations for the 2025 Grand Island Games, a community event for adults over 18 that features Olympic-style competitions such as sand volleyball, tug-of-war, and pickleball.

Registrations must be submitted by June 27 and the games will be held on July 25+26.

Grand Island’s VFW Post celebrated its 100th anniversary at a banquet Saturday night — it is now welcoming new members.

The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union ratified a national contract on May 22 that gives 26,000 JBS meatpacking workers in Grand Island better wages, a new paid sick leave program & a pension plan after nearly 40 years without one.

The agreement also increases vacation time, adds retroactive pay and boosts workplace safety measures.

Chadron State College announced its spring President’s and Dean’s Lists and Grand Island student Garrett Orcutt met the 4.0 GPA and 12-credit hour requirement—other local students also earned scholarships and awards from regional institutions including recognitions at Hastings and York. Several area students received academic honors and financial awards this semester, highlighting strong achievements across Central Nebraska.

Federal health officials reported that a salmonella outbreak linked to a recall of 1.7 million eggs has sickened at least 79 people (21 hospitalized) in seven states, including Nebraska, and they advised consumers to discard the recalled eggs.

The Grand Island Games team registration is open until June 27 (local teams may sign up) and organizers say the registration window remains unchanged (no additional details have been provided).
