COMMUNITY NEWS

  • State Street closed for road improvements on June 1 in Grand Island. The health department detected E. coli in Fort Kearney Lake from samples taken May 26 + gas prices decreased while forecasts showed breezy days with showers.  KSNB
  • Grand Island YMCA CEO Chad Knight said the community needs a new aquatics center as the pool at 221 E. South Front St. is substandard. Woodsonia Real Estate will present an updated plan today during City Council study session and a feasibility report is due in August.  Central Nebraska Today

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grand Island Parks & Recreation is hosting its free Summer Concert Series with live music from 8–9 p.m. on select Thursdays from June 4 through July 17 at local parks — the series features family-friendly tunes across genres at venues like Grace Abbott, Buechler and Stolley Parks.  KSNB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices dropped 15 cents this week in Grand Island — experts warn that prices could rise later as Iran threatens to close the Strait of Hormuz, potentially disrupting supply.  The Grand Island Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Street will close on both sides near Highway 281 for the rest of summer as local authorities prepare for road work. Motorists are advised to follow detours (check local postings) for alternate routes.  KSNB

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Red Cross in Grand Island will stop collecting platelets at its Blood Donation Centers in Grand Island and North Platte on June 30; whole blood donations will continue with revised days and hours starting July 1 (the change aims to improve shelf life and cut costs).  Central Nebraska Today
  • CHI Health St. Francis is temporarily moving its Grand Island inpatient substance use unit to Richard Young Behavioral Health in Kearney before June 30. Outpatient services will remain in Grand Island, and staff will continue care without interruption as plans for a long-term location are explored.  Nebraska TV
  • The American Heart Association is demonstrating CPR—an essential life-saving skill—during National CPR and AED Awareness Week. The training helps community members learn proper techniques.  KSNB

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Island Oasis Water Park is launching river walking and lap swimming sessions for adults starting Friday, June 12 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; admission is $5 or a season pass and the program is only open to those (16+).  Central Nebraska Today
