COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Memorial Day, the American Legion and VFW honored local veterans, with leaders urging support for those who served and remembering their sacrifices. Boy Scouts helped clean Veterans Memorial Park, and the Soldiers and Sailors Cemetery became a veterans' cemetery this spring—while the VFW plans to celebrate its 100th birthday on June 7.  Nebraska TV
  • Christine Haba was named the new Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Nebraska effective May 20 — the board voted unanimously after her service as Deputy Director. She brings strong local community experience from her roles on other boards and will work to strengthen the mentorship programs for local youth.  Central Nebraska Today

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 24, Grand Island police arrested a 16-year-old male after he sprayed an 18-year-old female with a large carbon dioxide canister at her apartment on N. Elm St at 6:02 a.m.—the incident caused a chemical burn to her face and he is held at the Lancaster County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of second degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony.  Central Nebraska Today
  • On May 24 at 12:40 p.m., police responded to Dollar General on N. Broadwell Ave where a customer tried to use a counterfeit $100 bill that was later found to be a movie prop and no suspect was identified.  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Grand Island Public Library will launch its summer reading program, Color Our World, this weekend with free activities for kids, teens, and families. Kickoff events start at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 31st for younger children and 2 p.m. on Monday, June 2nd for tweens and teens—with the latter featuring a water fight.  The Grand Island Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Island City Council approved a one-year investment grade energy audit with Honeywell on April 29 to find ways to lower energy costs for key buildings—City Hall, the Heartland Events Center, and the Public Library. The audit also looks at using unused ice-making equipment at the events center for a possible ice rink and may soon include the Law Enforcement Center with savings used to fund the improvements.  The Grand Island Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Tuesday that measles was present in Nebraska. Health officials are now monitoring the situation to prevent further spread.  KSNB
