CULTURE NEWS

  • This summer, 14 new sculptures will be installed at Railside as part of the Sculpture Walk program to replace 13 older pieces and brighten downtown—Nebraska artist Albert Rhea’s stainless steel piece Parent and Child is among the colorful additions. The new artworks are part of a statewide effort to keep public spaces fresh.  KSNB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A tornado struck near Saint Libory last week, leaving Bob Hirschman's ranch without 42 cattle, damaged fences, and scattered equipment. Volunteers helped clear debris as the ranch begins to rebuild (about 1.5 miles of fence was lost).  KSNB
  • Grand Island had its sixth warmest Memorial Day on record on Monday, May 25 when the high hit 95 degrees at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport + this temperature marked the warmest Memorial Day in 26 years and ranked sixth in 131 years of records.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Grand Island and Hall County Regional Planning Commission warn residents, business owners and developers about an email scam that impersonates officials regarding fake fee reviews near Locust and 6th Street Drive. Officials advise not to reply or share financial info (contact City Hall at 308-385-5444 for questions).  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island Public Library is seeking volunteer board members for four-year terms starting July 1. Applicants from Hall County can apply online or in person at the library (1124 W. 2nd St.) by June 8.  Nebraska TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local hospitals are bracing for trauma season as the Nebraska Community Blood Bank declared a blood emergency after supplies fell below a two-day reserve and type O blood dipped under a one-day level. The bank urges donors to help ease the shortage.  KSNB

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, May 23, the Nebraska Siege beat the Minneapolis Warhawks 78 to 0 in their first game at the Heartlands Event Center. Head coach Dominic Bramante shared his thoughts after the game.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The Grand Island Fightin’ Cranes held a ribbon cutting at renovated Ryder Park — the team will play its first home game Thursday as part of launching the new local franchise.  KSNB
