  • Toasted and The Danish Bakery raised over $8,000 to support an employee who lost their home in a tornado + local donors joined the effort to help cover urgent rebuilding costs.  KSNB

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Stuhr Museum hosts United We Celebrate on July 4 from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m., featuring live music & fireworks along with historical programming and cultural dances in Grand Island to honor America’s 250th birthday; admission costs $2.50.  KSNB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Walnut Middle School celebrated its 100th anniversary as students marked the last day of school by taking one final lap around the building. Principal Rod Foley — who has served since 2001 — will begin his new role as superintendent at Sandy Creek Public Schools in July.  KSNB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Swift will pay the state $1.25M to settle water pollution claims at the Grand Island JBS plant, following allegations that the company violated the Nebraska Environmental Protection Act — officials say the settlement will boost future compliance.  The Grand Island Independent

  • Lane closures are planned at the intersection of 14th Street and Huston Avenue for catch basin repairs; work will continue until June 4.  KSNB

  • Mary Lanning Healthcare will host the 2026 Cancer Walk and Butterfly Release on Thursday, May 28 in Grand Island, where community members can join to support cancer awareness (tickets are available on the provider's website).  KSNB

  • A Hyatt hotel is planned for the intersection of Highway 281 and Guenther south of Grand Island. This new project is expected to boost development density between Wildwood Road and Interstate 80.  The Grand Island Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 1 Nebraska softball won game one of its Super Regional 8 to 1 against Oklahoma State Friday at Bowlin Stadium (Rhonda Revelle Field); Jesse Farrell drove in five runs and Jordy Frahm pitched strongly, putting the Huskers one win away from the Women’s College World Series.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Nebraska softball beat Oklahoma State by 8 to 1 in Friday's NCAA Super Regionals — Jesse Farrell's three run home run helped secure the win. The Huskers play again today at 4 p.m. at Bowlin Stadium as they chase a spot in the Women’s College World Series.  KSNB
