COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mercy Meals of Grand Island will host a volunteer event on Saturday, May 31 to pack 150,000 meals to fight hunger. Volunteers aged 10 and older can sign up for a two-hour shift at Heartland Lutheran High School—3900 W. Husker Highway, where the meals will be sent locally and abroad.  Central Nebraska Today
  • On Thursday, Kenesaw City Auditorium held a groundbreaking as major renovations began, and on Wednesday the Cornhusker State Games launched their inaugural torch tour with its first stop in Grand Island. Cooler weather has returned after a warm stretch, and officials are watching how long the cooler temperatures will last.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hall County commissioners said federal funding cuts from the CDC have forced local agencies—such as the public health department, transit services, and CASA—to reduce staffing and programs. In their Tuesday meeting, the board also discussed cost-saving options for the courthouse annex addition, evaluating a $72,045 bid for face brick versus a mural option, but no final decision was made.  The Grand Island Independent
  • Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed Legislative Bill 198 into law Tuesday—this measure will take effect on Jan. 1 and stops pharmacy benefit managers from using practices that squeeze reimbursement rates from local pharmacies. The law also sets up oversight by the Nebraska Department of Insurance as pharmacists work to ease the pressure from rising closures across the state.  The Grand Island Independent
  • The Nebraska State Patrol warned motorists to put their phones down and buckle up as more than 45 million Americans are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend, with 87% planning to drive. Police officials urged safe driving practices—distracted driving and not wearing seat belts increase fatal crash risks.  KSNB
  • Northwestern Energy closed Webb Road North between 16th Street West and 18th Street West for gas main repairs, and the road was shut until midnight today—drivers were advised to follow detour signs and use caution around construction work.  Central Nebraska Today
