  • Boy Scouts placed 400 flags on poles around Grand Island to honor fallen veterans ahead of Memorial Day— the wrestling team installed the poles last night, supporting the United Veteran Clubs' effort.  KSNB
  • Fonner Park is celebrating 72 years as it evolves from a horse racing track to a hub for fairs, livestock shows and gaming (including the State Fair and ARPA-funded upgrades) that boost local tourism today.  KSNB
  • Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Grand Island will host its first Memorial Day ceremony at 8:30 a.m. CT on Monday, May 25 with Reveille performed by the National Guard — the ceremony will include tributes, patriotic music and speeches from local military officials, and is open to the public.  Central Nebraska Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rainfall slightly eased exceptional drought conditions in central Nebraska this past weekend, with D4 areas dropping from 9.7 percent to 8.2 percent—mainly in Gosper, Frontier, and Red Willow counties, leaving 95 percent of Nebraska under drought.  Central Nebraska Today
  • On May 18, federal officials finalized a bacteria-based plan to clean up contaminated groundwater at the former Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant near Grand Island using native microbes + nutrients to break down pollutants faster while cutting costs.  Nebraska TV
  • A family in St. Libory said their storm shelter saved them when a tornado destroyed their home Sunday. A storm chaser and firefighters rescued the couple trapped in the basement (neighbors later joined the cleanup).  KSNB
