COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Banners honoring the 2026 Hometown Heroes were mounted along Capital Avenue, Webb, and Broadwell following a reveal at Grand Island Senior High School on May 14 — arranged alphabetically by last name — and they will remain in place through Veterans Day.  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Nebraska at Kearney announced its dean’s list for spring 2026 (students needed to complete 12 credits and earn a GPA of at least 3.5) and published names of local and out-of-state achievers.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Grand Island will launch Citizenserve (an online system for filing local occupation taxes, fees and licenses) on June 1; May returns will be due June 25.  The Grand Island Independent
  • Hall County’s Rural Transit program (serving residents outside Grand Island) faces potential cuts as a 27.1% funding reduction takes effect on July 1. Officials will hold a public hearing soon to consider reduced service or possible partnership options.  Nebraska TV
  • Grand Island Parks and Recreation launched an interactive cemetery map today that lets visitors locate graves, search burial records, and explore local history (nine signs around the cemetery guide the way).  Central Nebraska Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Central District Health Department in Grand Island has named Dr. Tori Ponson as its new health director; he brings over 10 years of public health experience (including fiscal oversight and program management) while former director Teresa Anderson aids the transition until her last day, June 12.  Nebraska TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Two developments, Prairie District and Prairie Commons, plan to boost Grand Island's housing, healthcare, and commerce. Prairie District on west Highway 281 will add a hotel and apartments while Prairie Commons near the regional medical center has over 700,000 sqft built and expects more expansion soon.  KSNB
