- ➤ Hope Harbor in Grand Island has appointed three new board members—Lupita Ayala-Montañez, Cassie Casares, and Bart Qualsett—to help expand services for families facing homelessness. Central Nebraska Today

- ➤ A suspect (Khamis Yaya) was arrested in Grand Island on May 15 after he tried to steal a car with a young child secured in the back seat, and officers had to physically restrain him as he became uncooperative while he now faces charges for attempted theft over $5,000 and obstructing a police officer. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ Grand Island police arrested Khamis Yaya after he attempted to steal a vehicle with a child inside around 5:30 a.m. Thursday on North Front Street—he refused to comply and was handcuffed. Nebraska TV

- ➤ The Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighter’s Association and the State Fire Marshal’s Training Division have launched the 88th Annual Nebraska Fire School at multiple Grand Island sites including the Heartland Events Center and Fonner Park Campus—33 classes cover topics from fire safety and investigation to rescue and emergency medical services—vendor exhibits are also featured. - ➤ On Tuesday, Gov. Pillen signed LB 519 that lets prisoners request a secondary independent drug test to confirm field test results from the Department of Corrections—if the retest is negative, the department covers the cost but if positive, the inmate must pay. KSNB
- ➤ Nebraska lawmakers are reviewing LB415, a bill introduced by Senator Beau Ballard that would change the paid sick leave rules so companies that meet minimum standards do not need a separate policy and exempt certain workers like temporary agricultural employees and minors. The bill—now in the engross stage—also bundles amendments from LB402 and LB435 and may later see proposals from a failed minimum wage bill. KSNB
- ➤ Grand Island Public Works announced that S. North Road will be closed from Westgate Road to West U.S. Highway 30 for construction — the closure will start at 12 a.m. on Monday, May 19 and end at 12 a.m. on Friday, July 18, and the Nebraska Department of Transportation is leading the project so motorists should plan alternate routes.
