  • Nebraska Game And Parks is offering free fishing and park entry on May 17th as part of its annual event held the Saturday before Memorial Day. Anglers can fish at no cost but must follow all fishing rules—regular fees apply for camping, lodging and other activities.  Nebraska TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Grand Island firefighter Jared Stockwell pleaded no contest on Wednesday to a misdemeanor attempted child abuse charge in Hall County Court—prosecutors dropped his felony charges for enticing a minor electronically and child abuse with no injury, and he was ordered to pay $250 in fines and court costs.  KSNB
  • A Grand Island man, Ivan Maceo Alvarez, has been charged with stealing $30,821 from Walmart after being seen on camera seven times taking cash from the self-checkout between March 11 and April 25 — his bail is set at 10% of $30,000 and he will appear in Hall County Court on June 16.  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Central Platte NRD hosted the Nebraska Children's Groundwater Festival in Grand Island to teach nearly 900 fifth-grade students from 32 schools about groundwater through hands-on activities at Central Community College and College Park. NRD staff and partners led sessions on geology, water quality testing, grasslands, and mapping — providing practical lessons in water resource management.  Central Nebraska Today
  • On Tuesday at the Grand Island Senior High Career Pathways Institute, 11 GISH Academy juniors signed Registered Apprenticeships with local employers to gain work-based experience in welding, automotive, and manufacturing trades. School officials said the nine-year program—now including over 65 apprentices—builds strong ties between students and industry.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island Public Schools honored the 2025 PathBack recipients today and announced that GISH graduates who return home after college will have teaching opportunities — a program meant to bring new educators to local classrooms.  The Grand Island Independent

  • Governor Jim Pillen vetoed LB319, a bill that would have expanded SNAP access for convicted drug offenders. He issued the veto immediately, meaning taxpayer-funded food stamps will stay unchanged.  Central Nebraska Today
