  • The annual Hometown Heroes ceremony at Grand Island Senior High School honored 51 veterans, and banners will be hung along Capital Avenue from Memorial Day to Veterans Day - they will be rotated every two years.  KSNB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 (the world's largest operating steam locomotive) will stop at the Elm Street crossing in Grand Island at 3:15 p.m. May 28 before leaving at 4 p.m. as part of its coast-to-coast tour celebrating America's 250th anniversary.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive will roll into town on May 28, stopping at Walnut Street crossing from 3:15 to 4 p.m. Locals can watch this legendary train as it makes its brief appearance.  The Grand Island Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Around 800 fifth-graders from 23 schools gathered on Tuesday, May 12, at the Nebraska Children’s Groundwater Festival held at Central Community College and College Park. The free event featured interactive sessions on groundwater and conservation led by experts, showing how daily actions can protect water resources.  Nebraska TV
  • Jefferson Elementary teacher Johanna Vargas was honored with a national Science of Reading Rookie Award after years of service at the school where she once studied, worked as a paraeducator, and served as a secretary; she now teaches first graders using research-based methods to build strong reading skills.  Nebraska TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Exceptional drought conditions expanded on May 12 in central Nebraska, with 65 percent severity affecting Dawson, northern Gosper, Frontier and extreme north Red Willow counties, leaving 98 percent of the state under drought according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.  Central Nebraska Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nemaha Sports Construction finished major updates to Ryder Park baseball field by installing new turf, dugouts, and seating for the upcoming Fightin’ Cranes season. The park recently hosted a varsity game and will welcome fans on May 28 at 7 p.m.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The Cornhusker State Games Torch passed through Grand Island today as part of its relay (promoting local athletic competitions). The event celebrated local sportsmanship and community spirit.  KSNB
