- ➤ A federal lawsuit was filed April 28 in U.S. District Court in Lincoln over the fatal explosion at Hornady Manufacturing that killed Adriana Alvarez on Oct. 13, with her husband Michaela Alvarez naming Hornady Manufacturing, New Lachaussee, Platte Valley Energetics, and Training and Consulting LLC as defendants. - ➤ Authorities said a special education teacher from Holdrege Middle School, her husband, and their two sons were found dead near Johnson Lake on Saturday morning in a suspected murder-suicide — investigators said the husband, who had been treated for mental health issues, killed his family before taking his own life. - ➤ The Grand Island Public Schools Foundation staff giving campaign surpassed its $92,000 goal by raising $101,074 from staff and board members at a meeting on May 12 at Memorial Stadium. About 1,600 staff took part in the campaign, which had 25 teams—Joel and Terry Wiegand provided a $5,000 matching gift—and helped fund scholarships and classroom grants. Central Nebraska Today

- ➤ Central Nebraska Regional Airport—working with the City of Grand Island and various Hall County emergency agencies—conducted its triennial full-scale emergency drill Tuesday morning to test its Emergency Response Plan for an aircraft incident. - ➤ The Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department is launching a Junior Lifeguard Program for youth ages 11 to 14 and lowering the lifeguard hiring age to 15—training runs from June 4 to June 6, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Island Oasis Water Park and costs $42 per participant. KSNB
- ➤ At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Grand Island City Council discussed the 4th Street Lighting Improvement Project to add 40 new LED poles and upgrade 12 existing ones along 4th Street in the Business Improvement District for $250,000 funded by Keno funds—if approved, Grand Island Utilities will complete the work by the end of summer.
