CRIME NEWS

  • A Grand Island man, Ivan Maceo Alvarez (61), faces theft charges after allegedly stealing $30,821 in cash from a local Walmart between March 11 and April 25; he was arrested Friday with a $30,000 bond set and his next court date is on June 16.  Nebraska TV
  • State regulators have reported that scammers have used stolen images and forged dealer licenses to create fake websites that trick buyers into paying thousands for high-end vehicles—Lincoln dealer James Wood, victims in Grand Island, and a Pennsylvania couple have been caught in these schemes.  The Grand Island Independent
  • An alleged drunk driver hit a parked car in Grand Island—stopping nine blocks away, police said.  The Grand Island Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, Nebraska Game and Parks extended the campfire ban at state parks and wildlife management areas in central and western Nebraska through May 20 to cut wildfire risks following an executive order from May 9. Camp stoves running on gas or liquid fuel remain allowed while eastern parks let campfires in designated spots — visitors must always fully extinguish their fires to stay safe.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nebraska Public Power District launched the emPOWERING Nebraska’s Tomorrow program to share details about its planned generation and infrastructure projects that will support growing electricity demand and include a 20-year license extension for Cooper Nuclear Station through 2054. The initiative will add Princeton Road Station north of Sheldon Station with approximately 216 megawatts from reciprocating internal combustion engines and 478 megawatts from combustion turbines powered by natural gas — options for fuel oil are available if needed.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Tricia Dudley, the Water Quality Specialist for the Central Platte NRD, will update the board on letters sent to producers who failed to submit crop reports and water and soil samples, and she will discuss potential cease and desist orders for these nitrogen management violations. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 22 at the Central Platte NRD office (215 Kaufman Avenue) in Grand Island.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Drivers in Grand Island face delays this week as Manchester Road (from Independence Avenue to Viking Road) will be closed until June 20 for water main work and Alpha Street (between 10th and 11th Streets) will be closed until May 21 for pavement repairs.  Nebraska TV

  • CHI Health St. Francis, in collaboration with CHI Health Clinic Women’s Health, will host a free community education session on May 28 at 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room 2/3 at the hospital—Nurse Practitioner Chelsey Kennedy will explain when teens should see a women’s health provider.  Central Nebraska Today
  • CHI Health St. Francis received a new birth simulator in early May to help train nurses and students on different delivery scenarios and post-partum care—its advanced technology took a year to secure funding and arrive. Grand Island Senior High School students toured the simulator during their Academies program to learn hands-on techniques.  KSNB
