CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lonnie Mason, 42, of Grand Island was sentenced on May 7 in a federal court in Omaha to 250 months in prison for conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine—after his release, he will face a lifetime of supervised release. Central Nebraska Today
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Central Community College held its graduation ceremony today at the Heartland Events Center where 237 graduates, including five GED students, received their diplomas. Paulina Ortega, named the campus Outstanding Alumni Award recipient, delivered the commencement address—urging graduates to pursue their future goals. KSNB
- ➤ The Grand Island Public Schools Board of Education approved a memo of understanding on May 8 with the YWCA to operate a child care center in two classrooms at the O’Connor Learning Center, 2208 N. Webb Road. The YWCA will offer care for 40 children ages 3 to 5 for the coming school year, operating Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for nine months — the district will supply phone, internet, utilities, and custodial services. - ➤ A federal court in Lincoln is taking over a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Michaela Alvarez against Hornady Manufacturing Company and three related companies. The suit claims a flawed operating procedure led to the explosion that killed her spouse, Adriana Alvarez, in October 2023 — motions by Hornady and Platte Valley Energetics to dismiss the case remain pending. - ➤ Starting Monday, May 12th through Sunday, June 1st, Grand Island Police will join the Nebraska Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety in a Click It or Ticket campaign — officers will use 145 targeted overtime patrol hours funded by an $11,534.58 grant to enforce seatbelt laws and teach drivers about road safety. - ➤ On Friday morning, Nebraska Medicine held its Brake for Breakfast event where cars arrived around 6:30 a.m. and drivers received educational materials, healthy recipes + a free Hy-Vee breakfast with milk, sausage or bacon sandwiches and fresh fruit.
