Good morning, Grand Island. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 8th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food Bank of the Heartland said hunger in Hall County grew as food insecurity rose from 10.5% in 2021 to 14.8% in 2022, and nearby counties like Buffalo and Howard also saw increased need (data from Feeding America’s report). The bank now supplies Grand Island pantries, schools, and meal providers while cuts in USDA support led to roughly 500,000 fewer meals from March through July (farm bill changes may affect future aid).  The Grand Island Independent
  • Kearney Public Schools celebrated National Bike to School Day Wednesday by teaching students bike safety at local schools. AMC filed a federal lawsuit—seeking damages from being forced out of Conestoga Marketplace—after a lengthy court battle that reached the Nebraska Supreme Court.  KSNB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hornady plans to extend the sanitary sewer at its plant west of Grand Island to boost efficiency, expand its product line, and create more jobs in Hall County—Mary Berlie said the change will help the company work more effectively.  The Grand Island Independent

CRIME NEWS

  • A Grand Island man, Lonnie Mason, 42, was sentenced to over 20 years in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine after a February drug bust led investigators to seize approximately 25 pounds of the drug and a stolen firearm during an apartment search near North Wheeler Avenue — police said he is barred from possessing firearms.  KSNB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study from local universities forecasts that Nebraska's net farm income will grow 55% in 2025 to a record $9.42 billion, boosted by a $1.58 billion rise in government payments (which makes up 17% of the gain) and a $731 million increase in total receipts. The report also warns that market and policy uncertainties may alter these projections as crop receipts are expected to drop slightly.  KSNB
