CRIME NEWS

  • On May 2, Grand Island police arrested Amilcar Landaverde Roque—identified as the child's father—after he left his two-year-old unattended in a vehicle at the Grand Island Casino while playing games.  Central Nebraska Today

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Black Hills Energy submitted a proposal to the Nebraska Public Service Commission today asking to raise natural gas base rates to help cover inflation and nearly $453 million in system investments for more than 304,000 customers. If approved, interim rates will start on August 1, 2025 and final rates are expected in the first half of 2026 + the filing also sustains the System Safety and Integrity Rider to support pipeline safety upgrades.  Central Nebraska Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Central Nebraska had its driest start to the year since 1989, as Grand Island saw 2.92 inches of rain (9th driest in 130 years) while most areas recorded below-normal levels; Governor Pillen issued a burn ban today to curb the risk of grassland fires.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Pillen has issued an executive order waiving federal service-hour limits for truck drivers hauling essential fuels — including gasoline blends, diesel, fuel oil, ethanol, propane and biodiesel — amid rising shortages. The order is effective immediately and will remain in place until May 15 at 11:59 pm.  Central Nebraska Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Fonner Park, Tennessee Moon won the $25,000 Al Swihart Memorial Stakes by 5 3/4 lengths in 1:19.20 as fans cheered and trainer Mark Hibdon said she will be rested before her next race — she now has 21 wins in 38 starts with total earnings of $325,364. In a later race, Court Line won the Special Stakes by four lengths while jockey Kevin Roman and trainer Isai Gonzalez led season standings — adding to a busy day at the track.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island Senior High held its second annual unified track meet today, where athletes with intellectual disabilities teamed with partners to build lasting friendships and reach new personal records—teams from Kearney, North Platte, Lexington and Columbus joined the event.  KSNB
