COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Grand Island Kennel Club invites the public to attend the AKC All Breed Dog Show, Obedience & Rally Trials on May 10th & May 11th at Fonner Park Pinnacle Bank Expo Center where breed judging starts at 8:30 a.m. and doors open at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday & Sunday. Fast Cat Trials for all breeds will run from May 9th to 11th behind the Event Center.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island residents lined the route for Wednesday’s march to honor the seven Hall County natives killed in the Vietnam War (soldiers carried flags to recognize their sacrifice).  The Grand Island Independent

CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Island police booked Ibal Gonzalez for witness tampering after a review of recorded jail calls on April 30th showed he told a witness (32 years old) to lie about his alibi (the investigation is ongoing).  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hastings College's Phi Omega Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta inducted six students this spring — including Grand Island student Juana Lucas, a junior in marketing who met the society's academic standards.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal officials canceled nearly $100 million in grants for Nebraska health programs, including childhood vaccinations, disease prevention, and research, leaving local departments with fewer resources to improve outbreak readiness (the temporary restraining order for other states does not apply to Nebraska). Local health leaders warn the funding loss will force them to reassign general funds and delay planned capacity building efforts.  The Grand Island Independent
  • Governor Pillen has issued an order today to keep a burn ban in central and western Nebraska until midnight May 10 because the area is very dry. The ban covers a line (from U.S. Highway 81 at the South Dakota border to Highway 92, then west to U.S. Highway 281 and south to the Kansas border) while burning is allowed outside that area unless a red flag warning is in effect.  Central Nebraska Today
