- ➤ On April 24, the National Weather Service used satellite technology to track nearby wildfires, while Lake Hastings residents spoke with city council about low water levels and third graders at Lakeview Elementary learned about running a farmers market—later, community members offered feedback on the Cornhusker viaduct project. - ➤ Visitors to Railside District will see empty sculpture bases as Sculpture Walk Railside transitions 13 existing works and installs 14 new pieces selected last fall; coordinator Tom Ziller said extra help may be needed to complete the multi-week changeover before the last week of May. - ➤ Nebraska State Poet Jewel Rodgers will lead a GISH student workshop and free public reading with open mic on April 27 at 6 p.m. at the GISH Little Theatre, inviting locals to share in a creative experience. The Grand Island Independent

- ➤ Ashley Ambrosek (Benkelman resident) was named CCC-Grand Island’s 2026 Outstanding Alumni Award winner. She earned her EMT license early in her career and now practices pain management while expanding Kompus Aesthetics and Wellness in Grand Island and Benkelman. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ Central Community College will hold commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 8, for its Columbus, Grand Island and Hastings campuses. The Grand Island ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at Heartland Events Center (featuring keynote Ashley Ambrosek), while Columbus and Hastings events, starting at 7 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively, are livestreamed. - ➤ Central Community College will hold commencements on Friday, May 8 at three campuses. The Grand Island and Hastings events will be at Heartland Events Center at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., while the Columbus ceremony begins at 7 p.m. in the Physical Education Center (all ceremonies will be livestreamed). - ➤ Elementary students in Grand Island and Hastings planted trees Friday to mark Nebraska’s 153rd Arbor Day. Kindergartners and first-graders at Gates Elementary replaced a removed tree with a white swamp oak in Augustine Park while students at Raymond A. Watson Elementary planted a baby Japanese lilac as city officials celebrated the tradition. KSNB
