COMMUNITY NEWS

  • YWCA Grand Island announced a $1 million donation from Hornady Manufacturing that will name the new Child Development Center after Marval Hornady and add $250,000 for an outdoor playground honoring Marval and Joyce Hornady. The center—located at 315 Wyandotte Ave in the former Starr Elementary—will expand childcare from 115 to an estimated 300 children as part of the Building Brighter Futures Capital Campaign.  Central Nebraska Today

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested Abdalla Alnour after he attacked a 39-year-old man with a knife near 4th and Eddy St on Monday, April 21—he faces charges including second-degree assault, terroristic threats, attempted Class 2 felony, and three counts of using a deadly weapon.  Central Nebraska Today
  • A judge ruled Monday that Kelli Lepler, a Grand Island woman charged with 46 theft counts in a headstone scam that defrauded customers of over $200K, remains unfit for trial and must continue treatment at Lincoln Regional Center with a competency hearing set for June 17.  KSNB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nebraska corn farmers are expected to plant 10.6 million acres and invest nearly $3.1 billion+ according to a USDA report on planting this season. Farmers will start in mid-April as weather permits and officials urge safe practices on rural roads near farm equipment.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Senators Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts met with the Nebraska Farm Bureau Tuesday morning to urge Congress to renew the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that has raised wages and provided tax relief for family farms and ranches. Sen. Fischer warned that without renewal, an average family of four making $80,000 would face a $1,700 tax increase + a drop in the Child Tax Credit and Death Tax exemption.  KSNB
  • Nebraska Farm Bureau and congressional delegates warned that if Congress does not extend key parts of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), many Nebraska farm, ranch, and small business families will face higher taxes once the law’s benefits expire at the end of 2025. Lawmakers are working to renew provisions like the estate tax exemption and pass-through deduction to protect rural communities.  Central Nebraska Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services urges residents to take precautions against ticks during the spring and summer and advises checking skin and pets after outdoor activities. The agency recommends using EPA-registered insect repellent, treating clothing, and showering within two hours to help reduce the risk of tick-borne diseases.  Central Nebraska Today
