  • Grand Island will host the 13th Annual Go Big GIVE on May 7 to support 165 local nonprofits. Donors can begin contributing online from April 27 to May 6 and join the Pre-Give event at Double V Restaurant on April 30 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. sponsored by Lutz & community partners.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Rotary 14 named former University of Nebraska at Kearney chancellor Doug Kristensen as the 2026 Nebraskan of the Year, recognizing his 22 years of leadership and service in strengthening local institutions. The award underscores his trust, transparency, and commitment to community values.  KSNB
  • Global Roots Festival will bring families to experience global cultures without leaving home on Saturday, April 25 at the 4th Street Banquet Hall. The free event features live performances + international cuisine, artisan vendors and hands-on activities for all ages.  Nebraska TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded Tuesday afternoon to a basement fire at an apartment on West Koenig where a dog died while no residents were hurt; the blaze was controlled by 2:57 p.m. and officials urged residents to keep ovens and grills clean.  KSNB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Royal Engineered Composites broke ground on a $5M expansion that will add over 23,000 sqft to its flagship facility in Grand Island yesterday. The project is expected to boost local capacity and support growth.  KSNB

  • The Nebraska State Fair will bring motorsports and rodeo events, with the Twisted Chrome series kicking off with a truck and tractor pull on Friday, Aug. 28 at State Fair Motorsports Park and the Stampede Series starting with Rough Stock Rodeo on Saturday, Aug. 29 at US Foods Outdoor Arena.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nebraska’s Department of Water, Energy and Environment (DWEE) formed on July 1, 2025 and is set to save $1.8M in its first fiscal year while improving water quality, energy, and infrastructure. The agency also plans to advance the Perkins County Canal project and a nitrate study.  Nebraska TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nebraska Medicine’s Brake for Breakfast drive-thru event will provide a free grab-and-go meal and cancer screening checklist at Morrison Cancer Center in Grand Island on Friday, Apr. 24 from 7 to 9 a.m.—it offers a simple way for locals to learn about early detection and local screening services.  Central Nebraska Today

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Grand Island Habitat for Humanity purchased 15 acres from the Ziller family on the northeast side to build over 80 homes — construction will begin in 2028.  KSNB

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Nebraska Siege Professional Indoor Football Team will host its final tryout on May 2 at the 4H/FFA Field House at Fonner Park in Grand Island, with check-in at 11:30 a.m. and drills planned to decide final training camp candidates ahead of their inaugural season starting May 14.  Central Nebraska Today
