COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Engleman Elementary School students raised $2,821 for the GRACE Cancer Foundation during a five-day Coins for Cancer drive and presented the donation at a school assembly on April 17 (a demonstration of local teamwork).  Central Nebraska Today
  • Ryder Park is set to finish its renovations by the end of May with completed turf work, new batting cages, and bullpens designed to support more games. Additional improvements, such as a new concession + bathroom building and a possible video board next season, are planned.  KSNB
  • Online season passes for Island Oasis Water Park and Lincoln Pool are available through Friday, May 29 with youth, adult, senior and family packages while in-person sales resume at Island Oasis on Saturday, May 30 (call 308 389 0290 for details).  Central Nebraska Today
  • Law enforcement responded on April 18 to a mountain lion sighting near Alda and secured Cedar Hollow Middle School as a precaution, with officers urging residents to maintain a safe distance as no injuries or further sightings were reported.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Fonner Park hosted the Equitable Bank Relay Race last Sunday to raise funds for area schools, and Equitable Bank donated $1,100 in cash prizes + additional donations of $1,120 for the permanently disabled jockey fund.  KSNB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Little Caesars at 2128 Lawrence Lane reopens today under new ownership with all new staff. Free pizza slices were offered yesterday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., according to Allison Morgan of Aces Pizza, which now employs 23 people.  Central Nebraska Today

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nebraska gambling taxes increased over $5 million from January to March, with Grand Island casinos recording a 66% rise to $1,200,205 (part of a statewide total of about $16 million), state officials said.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction work is underway on I-80 in Hamilton County, starting 1 mile west of the Giltner exit and ending 3 miles east of the Aurora exit. Crews are placing guardrails and extending culverts — work is set to finish in November.  KSNB
