Grand Island Parks and Rec started work on a transformation at Pier Park after over 60 local skateboarders offered input—replacing old metal and wood with durable concrete features and removing the fence to be more welcoming.
The project costs $892,000 and will finish by the end of summer.

The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled Friday that Grand Island man Nimrod Torres Aquino (43) will remain in prison for two sexual assault crimes against a 15-year-old girl (convicted in 2023) after his appeal arguing a doctor's testimony and his lawyer's performance was rejected.

Today, rising sports betting interest is prompting lawmakers to bring Legislative Resolution 20CA to the floor for a voter decision on online wagering while educators begin teaching students about gambling risks—efforts that include a $30,000 grant to boost campus awareness.
If approved, the measure will allocate 3% of betting revenue to enhance support for problem gambling services.
The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the Legislature has the power to change parole eligibility in LB 50—a reform law passed in 2023 to ease prison overcrowding.
The court reversed a lower court decision that blocked the law and confirmed it can be applied retroactively for eligible inmates.

CHI Health St. Francis is selling $100 raffle tickets for its eighth annual Ticket to Win event, which will be held on June 5 at 4:30 p.m. in the hospital lobby.
